How to: create audio extracts
An audio extract refers to a specific part of a full interview many of which are over an hour long.
Stage 1: Register with the site (if you have not already done so)
Stage 2: Listening to a full interview and reading timecode
- Login to www.gasworkstodome.org.uk
- Open RealPlayer or QuickTime Player on your computer.
- On www.gasworkstodome.org.uk click "Audio Recordings" and select an interview you wish to create an extract from and catagorise.
- Click "Play the full interview in a new window" of the interview you wish to tag.
- When the new window has opened copy its URL.
- In QuickTime or RealPlayer select "File" then "Open" & paste (right-click the mouse and select 'paste') the URL you have just copied.
Stage 2: Creating audio clips
- Listen for a section of audio you wish to categorise and tag, then make a note of the start & end times in the form hh:mm:ss.
- You may find it more efficient to do this for the entire interview at one sitting as opposed to tagging one clip, posting it to the site and then going back for more
- On www.gasworkstodome.org.uk click "create audio clip".
- Give your audio clip a title, select the interview, fill in the start & end points you made a note of earlier.
- Select categories (you can select multiple items in a category by holding Ctrl while clicking with the mouse).
- If you wish, type in a description.
- Click Submit.
- Click the play button of the clip (the little arrow underneath "Start") to check the sound.
