I wish you had a "contact me" facility. I keep trying to hear the audio extracts but Quicktime terminates the connection at 10060 and I don't know why.

Hi
I am 60 now but I was born in October 1949. I lived for my first 6 years in Ordnance Cresent and believe that myself and my Brother went to this school. My name is John Williams. My brothers' name is Alan Williams.
Is there any way I can find out any more information

Azof Street Party 1953

This is the Azof Street Party celebrating the 1953 Coronation. I have a photo of myself in the arms of my brother. I was only 15 months old at the time of the party. I think the next occasion an Azof street party was held was to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Unfortunately if rained on the day and the party was moved to some garages in Bellot Street.

Tram in Woolwich Road

The pub to the left of the tram looks like the Ship & Billet at the junction of Blackwall Lane & Woolwich Road. Although not in the picture I think that to the right would have been the Work House which was incorporated into St Alphage's Hospital around the time of WW1.

I'm not totally convinced that this is Woolwich rd....??!! Surely this is Greenwich High Rd?.. As that immediate building looks remarkably like the North Pole pub and further to the right (on left)surely is Greenwich Station?...But then again what do I know?

Pub/School/church

My Family before me (and theirs...!)used this pub from Long gone times that spanned almost seventy years...
My Aunt mentioned a Landlord that was killed during world war 2, due to the pub being bombed while he was asleep upon his Sofa (Poor unfortunate soul!) But obviously ,this couldn't possibly be the same man as it would have been much later in time and,he's name wasn't Hallam in any case (that much I do remember!)

Incidentally, as somebody else on here mentioned ;the Dreadnought School WASN'T knocked down.. and,is still Currently INTACT!!! ...(as a building)
However, you may be forgiven(and of course you shall be.) ..for mistaking the fact that it was The Church that was Demolished circa late seventies/ early Eighties.

Hope this helps slightly.

Incidentally I grew up with a family that had the Surname of Hallam....you never know as we lived thereabouts in that Vicinity.

Correction

If I understand your comment correctly I don't think that you are correct. There are very few 'old' buildings on the entire 350+ acres that is now usually referred to as the 'Greenwich Peninsula', but the old Dreadnought School is certainly one of the ones that remains. My understanding is that it is currently used by the Horniman Museum (Forest Hill) as a store.

Although the street was pronounced 'Grenfell' as it is constantly referred to on this site;it was actually, spelt GREENFELL!......So perhaps the Editor would care to amend.
