My Family before me (and theirs...!)used this pub from Long gone times that spanned almost seventy years...
My Aunt mentioned a Landlord that was killed during world war 2, due to the pub being bombed while he was asleep upon his Sofa (Poor unfortunate soul!) But obviously ,this couldn't possibly be the same man as it would have been much later in time and,he's name wasn't Hallam in any case (that much I do remember!)

Incidentally, as somebody else on here mentioned ;the Dreadnought School WASN'T knocked down.. and,is still Currently INTACT!!! ...(as a building)
However, you may be forgiven(and of course you shall be.) ..for mistaking the fact that it was The Church that was Demolished circa late seventies/ early Eighties.

Hope this helps slightly.

Incidentally I grew up with a family that had the Surname of Hallam....you never know as we lived thereabouts in that Vicinity.

If I understand your comment correctly I don't think that you are correct. There are very few 'old' buildings on the entire 350+ acres that is now usually referred to as the 'Greenwich Peninsula', but the old Dreadnought School is certainly one of the ones that remains. My understanding is that it is currently used by the Horniman Museum (Forest Hill) as a store.

Although the street was pronounced 'Grenfell' as it is constantly referred to on this site;it was actually,spelt GREENFELL!......So perhaps the Editor would care to amend.

My great Aunt used to run this place apparently;though i only vaguely remember going in there. The Cafe was pulled down when i was still a child.

Hi there I am the one on the left and my younger brother is in the middle I think the girl was one of the Kirk family who also lived down our street we lived at number 13 Grenfell street with my parents and grand parents as you did in those days.

Sorry to have missed Mary Mills on May 9, 2008. My interest as a relative of Samuel and George Cutler of the firm Samuel Cutler and Sons Ltd of Providence Ironworks, Millwall is with their engineering activities, especially as it concerns gas holders and other major iron works projects.

I live in Canada, though I am at Kent University, Canterbury this year. Any light that one can shed on the company, its activities or remaining relatives still living in the London area would be most welcome.

Mitre public house, blackwall tunnel

My Great Grandfather owned this pub in the 18-1900's until his death. The name of the family was Hallam. I have been researching the family history and would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any information/picture regarding either the Mitre or Drednough School which was just along the road to the pub. I saw the school when I went up to London in the 1970 but unfortunately it has now been demolished.

I think you will find that this photo is not anywhere near the junction of Blackwall Lane but in fact closer to the William 4th Public house.

Greenwich Gasworks OT?

I suspect this is totally OT!

I used to work for SEGas in the early 1970's when I was being paid by SEGas for my university degree and had the pleasures of Greenwich Gasworks for about 3years.

I don't remember the black hole that was the old retort houses etc. as I worked on the LDF plant.

The crunch!
I live in Steyning, West Sussex and am building a model railway and wish to include a retort house etc. as part of the scenery.
I have a plan of the Steyning site c.1948 and would dearly like to see photographs of any similar works

Hello , what a great site to have found, My father was born in boord street in april 1928, he worked at the gasworks (later moving to lassal st),his father worked at the gasworks and his father before him.

THE BLACKWALL TUNNEL

After over 80 years our family has finally located a photocopy of the booklet "The Full and Complete Description of the BLACKWALL TUNNEL" by Alfred Wootten (Wootton)and we are searching for any other books written on this topic by Alfred Wootton or if anyone is aware of an original booklet. We know he owned four public houses in London, one being the "Star of the East" and we are searhing for any pictures or information related to the other public houses or history related to Alfred Wootton.
