The two Gas Holders

The two Gas Holders

Gas Holder 1 (foreground) and 2 (now demolished). The latter was at one time the largest gas holder in Europe if not in the world. Both were built to a very simple, yet sophisticated design, which had to cope with the marshy ground of the Peninsula. Gas Holder 2 was punctured by shrapnel from the Great Silvertown Explosion in 1917 and repaired. It was demolished in the 1980s. Gas Holder 1 was damaged by an IRA bomb in the 1970s but repaired and stands today.
